Profit Taking on Mining and Plantation Stocks

September 10th, 2008 · No Comments ·

SINGAPORE: Malaysian crude palm oil futures are likely to ease to around RM2,200 per tonne as surging production and weak demand weigh on the market, industry analyst Dorab Mistry said today.

Palm oil output in Indonesia, the world’s biggest producer, is likely to jump to a record high of 20 million tonnes in 2008, an increase of more than 16 per cent from last year.

Malaysia’s crude palm oil output is expected to reach 18 million tonnes, compared with 15.8 million tonnes in 2007, Mistry told an industry conference in Singapore.

Meanwhile, cargo surveyor Intertek Testing Services said today exports of Malaysian palm oil products for September 1-10 fell 1.7 per cent to 400,977 tonnes from 407,922 tonnes shipped between August 1 and 10.

The Malaysian Palm Oil Board has reported that palm oil stockpiles in Malaysia, the world’s second-largest producer of the vegetable oil, declined 6.5 per cent in August from a month earlier as exports picked up.

Inventory dropped to 1.85 million tons from 1.98 million tons in July.

Output gained 2.5 per cent on month to 1.6 million tons, while exports rose 4.6 per cent to 1.47 million tons, it said. - Reuters, Bloomberg

With most of the mining and plantation stocks experiencing meltdown today, KULIM’s share price plunged about 6 percent today from RM7.05 to RM6.60. Total volume of shares transacted stood at 41,531.

In retrospect, finance stocks were slightly up, with Public Bank leading the pack. Public Bank closed at RM 10.30, up 10 sen. Hong Leong Bank is also up 10 sen, closing at RM 6.65.
